Listen to SIRIUS Satellite Radio on Linux or OS X

If you’re a SIRIUS Satellite Radio subscriber did you know that you can listen to SIRIUS from your computer for free? No you didn’t, because I used to work for SIRIUS, and I remember specifically that no one ever did. Anyway, SIRIUS only supports means to do this (predictably) via Windows. Fortunately, Mike Lewis at packratstudios.com released this tutorial last March, showing us how to listen to SIRIUS (assuming you have an account) on our Linux or OS X systems. It looks like there may be several other methods floating around the web as well. I haven’t had the chance to test this myself, but here’s the link: packratstudios.com/index.php/2008…

How to use the new “Facebook Chat” without being on Facebook

In early April 2008, Facebook released to all its users the option to chat with other online Facebook users through a chat applet integrated into the Facebook website. While at times this default scenario may be very usefull, it would be better to have the option, if desired, to be able to integrate online Facebook Chat friends into a standalone program window, or even better, to integrate them into the same contacts list as, say, your MSN/Live Messenger friends, AIM buddies, or any among the Silly Creatures that still use ICQ.
Recently, Facebook developer David Reiss announced that there are plans currently in the works to build an XMPP interface for Facebook Chat, which means it won’t be long before many Instant Messenger programs will be able to easily and successfully interact with Facebook Chat. In the mean time, however, the software program Digsby already supports Facebook Chat as well as integrated support for MSN/WLM, AIM, ICQ, Yahoo and others. And as Trillian has become one of the most bloated pieces of proprietary software on the market, Digsby could be a sweet move for a lot of people, particularly in the Windows user base who like to integrate all their chat services into one buddy list, with Digsby including the Facebook Chat service. Unfortunately, Digsby is, at the time of writing this article, only available for Windows users, but it has been announced that Mac/Linux versions should be available soon as well.
If Linux users, for the time being, would like to integrate Facebook Chat into Pigdin, the program formerly known as GAIM, it should be known that there is no official, error-free way of doing this, in part due as I’m told to exagerated liscensing issues and probably even more due to the fact that Facebook Chat is only a month and a half old. However, a user on ubuntuforums.org by the name of BigBrownChunx has successfully released a working plugin for Pidgin that enables Facebook Chat integration. The author has stated that the software is buggy, and other users report that it most definitely works, however with some issues such as signing users on and off. Linux users copy the .so file to /home/(USER NAME)/.purple/plugins, and Windows users copy the .dll file to the plugins folder inside your Pidgin installation folder.
